Overnight, a major flash flood struck the Nepal–Tibet border region, killing at least nine people and leaving hundreds missing. Video compiled by the BBC show the waters rapidly rising across the region. The flooding hit communities along the Lhende Khola River, sweeping away roads, bridges, homes and hydropower infrastructure. A massive mudslide also struck Gyirong Port, a major crossing between Nepal and Tibet, cutting roads, communications and power connections. Local authorities suspect an earthquake triggered an ice and rock avalanche into the river, producing the sudden surge of water. The scale of the incident is still unfolding. At least 348 people have been reported missing, including 105 Indians, 93 Nepalis, three Americans and 12 British nationals. Eight South Koreans working at a hydropower project are also missing. Authorities are warning that the danger may not be over. A blockage remains upstream on the Lhende Khola, raising the possibility of another major flood. Nepali and Chinese authorities are conducting rescue operations, with 574 Chinese rescuers deployed to the affected border crossing. India and South Korea are also coordinating assistance. Rescue helicopters have so far been unable to land in some areas because of the flooding and debris.
