Fox News reported that a proposal has been raised to establish U.S. air and naval bases in the port of Berbera, Somaliland, citing the strategic importance due to blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and threats near Bab al-Mandab. According to the report, Gen. Michael Langley of AFRICOM met with Somaliland's president in November 2025 to discuss the proposal, which remains controversial and unofficial.
