On January 19, 27-year-old Ali Ataei was shot and killed by regime forces in Tehran while protesting against the Islamic Republic. His father, attempting to rescue a wounded woman, found Ali’s body in the street and was forced to pay a large sum or agree to bury Ali as a Basij member to retrieve his son's body for burial.
