Former German Economy Minister Robert Habeck: People often think that because Jews were victims after the Second World War and after all the pogroms, the State of Israel is therefore a peaceful state. But that isn’t the case. It is part of the DNA of the State of Israel never again to allow Jewish life to be destroyed through violence. It has always been a defensive, combative and, in that sense, outwardly aggressive state. But then there is a step that goes beyond that — and in Gaza, that step has gone far too far in many places. I am simply arguing that we should not make the mistake of silencing ourselves where legitimate questions are being raised.
