Pakistan’s principal decision-maker, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is reportedly heading to Tehran, Iran this week, according to some regional news outlets, amidst the threat of imminent U.S.-Iran escalation. Since the start of the war, Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator, but has struggled to realize the level of success in the role that other regional nations, like Qatar and Oman, have. This comes as Iran increasingly targets vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to gain back lost leverage and the likelihood of U.S. President Donald J. Trump authorizing expanded strikes on Iran in the near term rises.
