Trump (PBS): 'Very Good Chance' of Deal — New U.S.-Iran Proposals Exchanged — Two-Phase Framework: Hormuz First, Nuclear Second — Enrichment Freeze Timeframe Dispute: U.S. 20 Years vs Iran 5+5
Gulf & Naval- President Donald Trump told PBS NewsHour there is a 'very good chance' the U.S. and Iran are nearing a deal to end the war — a notable softening from his Day 73 'totally unacceptable' rejection. The two sides exchanged new proposals on the back of the Pakistani back-channel + Qatar/Egypt mediation. The emerging framework is explicitly two-phase: (1) Phase 1 — Hormuz first: Iran lifts its 'closure' chokehold and the U.S. ends its blockade; all parties (including Israel and Hezbollah by proxy) declare an end to the war; (2) Phase 2 — Nuclear: Iran freezes domestic enrichment and the uranium-enrichment program. The freeze timeframe is the live point: U.S. proposes 20 years, Iran counters 5 years with a possible 5-year extension. The structural change vs the Day 68-72 cycle is the explicit phase ordering: Hormuz before nuclear concedes the sequencing position Iran has held since the blockade began.
- Additional Phase 2 elements being drafted: the IAEA gains renewed access to Iranian nuclear sites for inspections, and Iran pledges not to operate underground nuclear facilities. The pledge-not-to-operate-underground clause is a direct response to the Day 77 NYT package describing the commando-extraction option for buried HEU — if Iran formally pledges not to operate underground, the U.S. removes the operational justification for inserting commandos to retrieve material. The IAEA access provision is a regression of the post-JCPOA 'extra-protocol' inspection regime that lapsed in 2025, restoring a meaningful verification floor for U.S. and European publics. No agreement yet — these are draft positions exchanged through mediators.
